A tiered island allows for simple food prep on the lower side and a snack counter on the higher side, facing the adjoining room. This design is practical for small spaces and can be placed behind closed doors in a wall alcove, making it perfect for second kitchens in recreation rooms, studios, or master suites.

Eat-in kitchens are a popular design choice, offering an informal, efficient design that is ideal for today’s casual, fast-paced lifestyle. Depending on the size of the kitchen, various options are available for creating an eat-in kitchen. Counter dining is a great option for small spaces, with a breakfast bar providing a casual, contemporary feel. A two-tiered peninsula or island can house a sink or cooktop on the lower side, with room for diners on the opposite side. Imaginative counter stools can be great decorating assets, but make sure the counter overhang is deep enough to accommodate knees comfortably. At least 42 inches should be allowed from the open end to the opposite wall, and the fridge or wall oven should not be located near the seating area.

If you want to have a comfortable breakfast or snack area in your kitchen, there are several options available. One option is to create a cozy nook or chic bar, but be sure to leave enough space for each diner. Another option is to add a breakfast area with built-in banquette seating, which can be charming and welcoming. This is especially useful for small kitchens or for families with young children, as benches take up less space and are safer than counter stools. Whether your kitchen is ethnic, country/cottage, or retro, there is always a way to work a little breakfast into your schedule.

  • Kitchen Dining. If you have a large kitchen or a natural alcove, dining tables that seat from four to 12 people can be a great choice. You can choose chairs that match your personal taste from traditional heirloom to modern glass-and-metal. Another option is having an island or table made of the same material as your cabinets or countertops. For a casual feel, small armchairs all around the table are a good idea.

    A round table is a friendly choice and a safer option for an active family or smaller space. You can create a welcoming space in the dining area of your kitchen with more elaborate curtains or draperies. Match or coordinate your eating-area window treatments with those in the work area for continuity. Two-tiered islands with food prep on one side and counter seating on the other are a popular choice, as are islands with a microwave opposite the fridge. For larger kitchens, two islands may be the way to go, with one dedicated to food prep and the other for serving and entertaining.
