Ants are the most invasive insects and can be found in every room of your home. With over 12,000 different species worldwide, some environments have ants making up more than 50% of the insect population. These uninvited guests can enter through small cracks in windows, vents, and under doorframes, attracted to everything from water and sugar to grease and other food traces. While there are many ant families, the ones you may face are carpenter ants, sugar ants, thief ants, and pavement ants. Carpenter ants nest within damp wood, sugar ants love sweets and can contaminate food, thief ants prefer greasy foods or proteins, and pavement ants are small and reddish-brown. They build their nests along the sides of garages and houses constructed on concrete slabs, and enter through cracks in the basement walls or concrete floors, or through basement windows and doors. Pavement ants are more likely to be found indoors during the winter months because they prefer to forage for food outdoors during the summer.
