When designing a bathroom that will be used by both adults and children, it’s important to strike a balance between sophistication and practicality. Instead of fancy draperies and glamorous accessories, choose timeless materials and casually elegant touches that can withstand the wear and tear of children. A washable poly/rayon shower curtain with a raw silk finish, granite, marble, or ceramic tiles, and washable walls with a faux finish design are all great options.

On the other hand, if you’re designing a bathroom solely for kids, you can be more playful with your decor choices. Choose brightly painted walls, towels, and non-slip rugs that can be easily changed and updated. Colorful toothbrush holders and accessories can also add to your theme, whether it’s Barbie or the Great Barrier Reef.

For a unique touch, replace the ordinary vanity door and drawer pulls with ceramic ones that match your color scheme. If the bathroom is shared by multiple kids, consider adding some privacy, such as a semi-enclosed toilet alcove or opaque shower curtain. Adequate storage is also important, even if it’s just a single drawer or basket under the sink.

Regardless of whether the bathroom is shared or not, safety should always be a top priority. For younger children, a sturdy, low step stool is essential to help them reach the sink and use the toilet. Use shatterproof acrylic or plastic accessories, such as toothbrush holders and drinking cups. Other safety features, such as rounded corners and edges, nonslip backing on rugs, and grab bars in the shower or bath, are important for all ages. Installing antiscald devices to prevent hot water burns is also crucial.

Today’s families appreciate universal design ideas that make a bathroom safe and functional for all ages, including grandparents. Safety is always in style when it comes to bathroom design. Check out the following pages for more tips and ideas on how to decorate your child’s bathroom:

DIY Rubber Duckie Shower Curtain

To create your own rubber duckie shower curtain, you’ll need a fabric shower curtain, tape measure, painter’s tape, fabric medium, acrylic paint, stencil spray adhesive, 1-inch stencil brush, 3/8-inch stencil brushes (x3), a soft, clean cloth, and an iron and ironing board.

  1. Prewash and dry the shower curtain according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Purchase rubber duckie and water splash stencils or make your own out of clear plastic. Plan out the design on the shower curtain by leaving approximately 14 inches between ducks horizontally and vertically. Place a small piece of tape at these locations.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to add fabric medium to the paint. Center the duck stencil on the piece of tape from step 2 and remove the tape. Stencil yellow with the 1-inch brush. Repeat at every tape mark, flipping the stencil over a few times for visual interest. Stencil the eyes and feathers gray and the beak orange with the 3/8-inch brushes. Repeat on all ducks.
  4. With blue paint and the water splash stencil, add water around each duck and between every two ducks, both horizontally and vertically. Let dry. Place a clean cloth over the design and run an iron over the cloth to heat-set the paint.

Miniature Marvels Kids’ Bathroom Decorating Idea

A bath designed just for children used to be a novelty, but now many homes have a bath reserved just for the family’s little ones. The next step in kid-size luxury may be bath fixtures that are sized for youngsters. Instead of step stools to reach the sink and plastic contraptions to make the toilet seat fit a child better, a suite of fixtures actually designed for young children is safer and more comfortable.

Choose a system with a sink and tub that have anti-scald devices and one in which all fixtures have conventionally sized plumbing so you can switch them out when your kids get bigger. In a supremely kid-friendly bath like this, the only thing that remains the same as in a conventional bath is the ironclad rule: Never leave a child in the tub unattended for even a moment.

Creating a kid-friendly bathroom can be done on a budget or as a complete renovation. Use these ideas to find the best method for you.
